What can the Dually Halter be used for?

Used well, the Dually can make everyday handling clearer and help horse and handler find a more comfortable conversation.

  • Calm, responsive leading
  • Standing and personal-space exercises
  • Groundwork and loading
  • Long-reining using the side rings
  • Bitless use for suitably prepared horses
  • Everyday use as an ordinary headcollar

How does it work?

The training noseband gives the horse a clear signal when you ask from the schooling ring, then releases as the horse responds. Good timing makes the difference: the release tells the horse which response worked.

The aim is not a stronger aid, but a clearer one, used as lightly as the situation allows. The Dually does not do the training for you. Correct fitting, light hands, thoughtful preparation and a well-timed release are what make it useful.

Made for clear, accurate communication

The Dually is a carefully considered piece of equipment, not simply an ordinary headcollar with another ring added. Its design allows the same halter to be used for everyday handling or as a more precise training aid.

Adjustable double noseband

Allows the Dually to function as either an ordinary headcollar or a pressure-and-release training halter.

Double-stitched nylon

Broad, durable webbing designed for regular handling and training.

Quality brass fittings

The metal fittings are designed to bend or break under extreme pressure, although they must never be relied upon as a safety-release system.

Rings on both sides

Provide lateral control for long-reining and suitably taught bitless work.

Choosing the correct Dually size

Dually Halter sizing guide showing where to measure the nose, head and cheek
Measure the nose, head and cheek, then compare your figures with the size guide.

Dually Halters are generously sized and offer plenty of adjustment. A horse’s height is a useful starting point, but two horses of the same height can have remarkably different heads. For the best fit, please take these three measurements before ordering.

  1. Nose: Measure around the face just below the cheekbones.
  2. Head: Measure around the area where a bridle headpiece and throatlash would sit.
  3. Cheek: Measure down the side of the face along the cheekbone, where bridle cheekpieces would lie.

How to fit the Dually correctly

If the video does not open here, watch it directly on YouTube.

‘Fitted correctly’ is the important part. The Dually should sit a little higher than many ordinary headcollars. The upper, non-pressure noseband should sit just below the cheekbones, with the lower training noseband positioned high on the firm bridge of the nose, not down on the softer part.

  1. Loosen the noseband and the strap beneath the chin before putting the halter on.
  2. Adjust the headpiece until the upper noseband sits just beneath the cheekbones.
  3. Fasten the lower straps so the halter is secure and comfortable, without excessive twisting on the horse’s face.
  4. Recheck the fit before training and again after the horse has moved in it.

For sensitive horses

If your horse is particularly sensitive or there is a risk of rubbing, a natural sheepskin nose band cover can be placed over the training rope part of the noseband. It is still crucial to make sure that Dually is fitted correctly when using a sheepskin.

Important safety information

  • – Never tie a horse using the schooling or training ring. Always use the correct non-schooling ring.
  • – Do not leave a horse unattended in a stable or field while wearing a Dually.
  • – When travelling, tie only from the non-schooling ring and remove anything in the horsebox that could catch on the other rings.
  • – If the horse will be eating hay while travelling, loosen the strap beneath the chin by a few holes to allow comfortable jaw movement.
  • – Although the rings are designed to bend or break under extreme pressure, the Dually is not a breakable or field-safe headcollar.

Frequently asked questions

How do you pronounce Dually?

Dually is pronounced ‘Dooley’.

Can I use it as an ordinary headcollar?

Yes. Attach the lead rope to the non-schooling ring for ordinary leading and tying. Never tie a horse using a schooling ring.

Does a lead line come with the Dually?

Not with the individual Dually Halter. Your purchase includes the Dually, training booklet, and free UK delivery. A Dually and 17ft Lead Line Bundle is also available.

Which line should I choose?

Choose the single 17ft line for leading, loading and groundwork. Choose the pair of 30ft lines for long-reining. The longer pair is not intended to replace an everyday lead line.

Is there a complete Starter Kit?

Yes. The IH Starter Kit + Magazine Membership includes a Dually, 17ft line, pair of 30ft lines, Idolo Tether Tie, signed copy of Perfect Manners, and one year’s Membership with printed magazines and online learning.

Will a Dually make my horse load?

The Dually can provide clearer communication during thoughtful loading training, but it is a training aid, not a shortcut. Loading difficulties may involve fear, previous learning, pain, the vehicle, the journey or several factors together.

Can it be used for long-reining?

Yes. The rings on either side allow two lines to be attached for long-reining. Correct fitting, safe line handling and suitable preparation are essential.

Can it be used as a bitless bridle?

Yes, for a suitably prepared horse and a handler or rider who understands how to fit and use it. Begin in a safe enclosed area and make sure the horse understands the aids before progressing.

Can my horse wear it in the field?

No. The Dually is not a field-safe headcollar and horses should not be left unattended while wearing one.

What training comes with it?

Every purchase includes the instructional booklet and IH members have access to the online Dually training videos.

Do I need IH Membership to use it?

No, but IH Membership is highly recommended alongside the Dually as a next step for people who would like more training demonstrations, resources and access to the Members’ Helpline.

What if I am between sizes?

Use all three measurements rather than choosing by height alone. If you are still unsure, call us on 01488 71300 or email office@ihhq.net and we will help you choose.
