#1 – Spring Grass & The Hidden Risks with Anna Welch
This one feels especially relevant right now because as the grass comes through, it’s not just greener… It’s nutritionally very different, and that’s not to mention the poisonous plants that are starting to grow…
The key insight:
A bit like chocolate… ‘Spring grass can keep a horse eating past their energy requirements… without ever truly satisfying them.’
It’s high in sugar, low in fibre, which means horses can keep eating without triggering that “I’m full” signal… And for some horses, that’s where problems begin.
A few things that really stood out:
- Even short gaps without eating can disrupt the gut and actually increase the risk of colic and laminitis (starvation may not be the way to go… So what do you do?)
- Simply restricting turnout often backfires; many horses will just eat faster
- Cold, bright mornings can be particularly dangerous (find out why)
- It’s not just about the grass, poisonous plants like sycamore and ragwort can pose serious, sometimes fatal risks (know what to look out for)
