About Julia…
IH Trainer Julia Duncan is based just outside Edinburgh and covers a 30-40 mile radius. Her horsemanship journey began in 2015, inspired by an Intelligent Horsemanship (IH) demo and her desire to connect with her troubled rescue horse, Indie. Recovering from cancer treatment between 2016-18, inspired her to follow her dream to become an Intelligent Horsemanship Trainer. She completed the IH Foundation Course in 2020 and was awarded her IH Diploma in October 2021.
Julia embraces the IH ethos of continuous learning and draws from a wide range of horsemanship resources and teaching, adopting tools and techniques that support her calm, empathetic style.
Julia’s approach prioritises the value of noticing and responding to how our horses are feeling. Learning to read horses, hearing their questions and responding in a way that helps them (and us!) to feel safe creates connection and relaxation; the foundation stone on which to build on. Recognising pain-related behaviour is a core component of Julia’s approach and more recently rehabilitating her own OTTB (treated for kissing spines and associated problems) has enhanced her understanding around building core and posture alongside finding relaxation and trust.
People usually come to Julia for support in resolving unwanted behaviours in their horses. This could include challenges like loading, difficulty catching, building confidence in youngsters, farrier anxiety or dealing with extreme spookiness.
Resolving unwanted behaviours involves ground-based exercises to establish two-way communication. Subtle changes in the horse-handler dynamic on the ground can be game changers in addressing broader issues. What she hears most often from her clients is how the tools and techniques they’ve learned have led to a deeper connection with their horse.
She loves to make her sessions enjoyable and fun for both clients and their horses. When both handler and horses are relaxed, they learn so much better, and this makes it so much easier to resolve the wider problems.
