Fitting Your Dually Halter Correctly: with Kelly Marks
In this video, I’m going to show you exactly how to fit your Dually Halter correctly. It’s so important to get this right to make sure it works effectively and is comfortable for your horse.
Dually Halters come in different colours, and these colours actually indicate the size, so you can get the perfect fit for your horse, whatever their breed or size. For example, the green one is the smallest, great for those lovely Welsh Mountain ponies. Red is a really versatile size that fits loads of horses, while black is ideal for your medium Thoroughbreds and smaller Warmbloods. And for the big lads, like extra-large draught horses, we’ve got the blue.
I’ll show you two easy ways to pop the halter on your horse. You can either slide it gently over their nose, or bring it under their jaw first – whichever you find easiest. The main thing is to make absolutely sure that throat piece sits nice and snug right underneath their throat.
Once it’s on, we’ll look at how to adjust it for that perfect fit – you’ll be using the strap under their chin for this. You want it to be firm enough that it won’t slip around, especially not over their eyes, but definitely not too tight. You’ll notice the Dually Halter is designed to twist a little bit when you apply pressure – that’s how it’s meant to work. And a really key thing to check is that the nose band sits nice and high up on their nose, well clear of their nostrils. You should be able to easily get a couple of fingers between the halter and their nose.
Key Takeaways:
- Dually Halters come in colour-coded sizes, so make sure you choose the right one for your horse to get that all-important proper fit.
- Getting the fit spot on is crucial. The throat piece needs to be under the throat, and the nose band should be high on the nose, feeling firm but not tight, and definitely not blocking those nostrils or slipping over their eyes.
- The Dually Halter is designed to twist slightly when you use it – that’s a deliberate part of how it helps with communication.
