Carrot Stretches Without Getting Bitten! Maintaining Mobility & Flexibility in Horses
In this video, I’m sharing some of the gentle stretching exercises I do with my amazing now 30 year old veteran horse, Pie. We’ve been together for almost two decades now, and just like us as we get a bit older, keeping Pie mobile and flexible is important for his well-being so he can continue to enjoy life (and maybe even a fun ride or two!).
You’ll see my clever trick using an apple on a stick (attached to a cane for extra reach!) to encourage Pie into some lovely stretches, and avoid training hip to become nippy! Focusing on getting a nice movement through his back. We take it slow and steady – that’s key! – and always make sure we’re on a soft but sturdy surface for his comfort and safety.
What will you learn from watching?
- You’ll see how important it is to maintain mobility and flexibility in our older equine friends. Just like us, staying active and stretching helps them feel their best!
- I’ll show you how using positive reinforcement, like a tasty treat, can be a really effective and engaging way to encourage your horse to stretch.
- We’ll also talk about crucial safety tips, like being careful with your lure and ensuring you’re on a safe surface. If this interests you, check out “Pilates for Horses” by Gillian Higgins, there are lots of different ways to help your horse stay supple. Hope you find this helpful!
