A Q&A with IH Trainer Lucy Williams
(The Intelligent Horsemanship Magazine)
How long have you been involved with horses and how did you get involved with them?
I have always had a love for horses from as far back as I can remember. Visiting the New Forest National Park as a young child was one of my favourite places to be. It was a little tricky as not only were my family all non-horsey, but they also found horses to be quite intimidating. When I was 8 years old, we moved house, to find there was stables just at the end of the road. I used to go and stand at the gate and watch. After a couple of evenings watching through the gate, I was spotted and invited onto the yard to meet the horses, and I was hooked.
Why did you decide to qualify as an IH Trainer?
At the age of 21, I finally bought my first horse. As a child, I had loan ponies, shares and rode for other people, but we couldn’t afford a pony of my own. I wasn’t looking to buy a horse at the time, but Shamrock appeared, and I couldn’t resist. I had always handled the trickier horses but never had I come across the constant behaviours she was displaying. I called in my local IH Trainer and never looked back. All the traditional methods had failed this beautiful mare, who had been so misunderstood. In the six months before I owned her, she had been in four homes, and she was only four years old. IH methods worked with instant results, and I knew it was the path for me.
Shamrock taught me more than I could have ever asked. She let me know when I was getting it right and expressed herself when I was getting it wrong, and together we became a great team. The satisfaction I get from helping horses and their owners is just incredible; I feel very privileged to be part of such an amazing team of people.
What is a typical day for you?
I wake up around 6am, go through emails and messages from the previous evening and then set off to work. On average, I see between 3 and 6 horses per day. I work Monday to Thursday with behaviour clients, and most Saturdays are taken up with my Hampshire Agility Clinics.
