The Importance of Correct Saddle Fitting and Placement

An observational study exploring how poorly fitted or incorrectly positioned saddles can contribute to pain, physical changes and behaviour commonly interpreted as resistance or disobedience. Through three case studies, Jill Shepard demonstrates the importance of listening to the horse, checking saddle fit carefully and rebuilding confidence after pain has been addressed.

Project abstract

This student research project examines the relationship between saddle fit, saddle placement and behavioural or physical problems in horses. The study developed from the author’s work with Sooty, a Welsh Cob who had begun bucking, rearing and bolting when ridden and had subsequently been labelled a “nasty” horse. His willingness to be ridden bareback led the author to investigate saddle-associated discomfort.

The project presents three observational case studies involving horses displaying behaviours such as reluctance to be tacked up, licking and chewing in the presence of the saddle, rushing, refusing to go forward and attempting to evade ridden work. Saddle construction, flocking, balance, panel contact, girthing and placement behind the scapula were considered alongside changes in the horses’ backs and musculature.

The case studies suggest that pain caused by unsuitable saddles may be mistaken for behavioural defiance. Following improved saddle fit and gradual, reward-based reintroduction, the horses showed greater comfort and acceptance. The project concludes that saddles should be checked regularly by a suitably qualified professional and that owners should regard changes in behaviour as potentially meaningful signs of discomfort.
