A Q&A with IH Trainer Kathy Whitman

(The Intelligent Horsemanship Magazine)

How long have you been involved with horses? And how did you get involved with them?

I have been around horses all my life, I grew up on a farm, and all my family either rode or worked with horses. You could say they are in my blood.

Why did you decide to qualify as a IH Trainer?

I was managing a livery yard, and my friends from Intelligent Horsemanship came to do some training clinics, from groundwork and confidence building to ridden work. I really loved being involved with making a difference for the horses and owners. It was really rewarding to see the difference it made.

What is a typical day for you?

My day starts at 7am and finishes between 5pm and 8pm, depending on what jobs I have lined up. A typical day starts with sorting my own horses, then working for a lovely family, looking after their show ponies. After this, I either go to work with people and their horses, supporting and working with their problems, or go on visits with our therapy ponies to care homes and specialist hospitals.

What’s important to you when you see an owner and their horse for the first time?

When seeing a horse or owner for the first time, I like to spend time with the owner first, so I can listen and figure out what is and isn’t the problem. Then I get the owner to introduce me to their horse, and I can figure out the relationship between them and what we need to work through.
